On the 24th of April 2022, for the first time in many years, Archers of Zoo Lake hosted an annual outdoor club championships. Archers came out to shoot a World Archery format 72 arrow rounds and distances ranging from 20 to 70 metres depending on their category. The day was a great success and and gave our archers a nice taste for outdoor competitive shooting.
One brand, one club, one community. We really want to encourage our archers to get behind this brand and help us to grow the community. The last few years have been really tough but our community has shown such amazing resilience and we have high hopes of continued growth and success in the years to come.
A 4 Part series on how to choose the correct recurve bow for you! Focusing in on Risers & Limbs, all the options available and how to figure out what the most ideal options are for you.
In this Video Lesson, I take you through the differences between the recurve bow styles from both IFAA and World Archery competition formats. My focus here is on the differences in equipment but I do touch on the aiming methods for each style. I’ve done my best to cover the most important differences and limitations of each bow style. Below are links to resources from the federations with official rules and more in-depth information about the different recurve bow styles.
I have created a very extensive Modern Recurve Equipment List. The list is not exhaustive but aims to cover as much of the archery equipment an archer might require in their archery career.
In this first video lesson, I am talking about Modern Recurve Equipment. In this video, I take you through a full archery kit item by item. The video serves a few purposes:
In order for me to scale and grow our community, my teaching cannot be limited to face-to-face interaction. This is why I originally created the blog and later the youtube channel. However, I have been inconsistent at best and over the years very little content has made its way to our community. I really am determined to create a truly helpful online resource. Video format seems to be the easiest for me and it suits the nature of archery and teaching in general. So, this year I am committing to creating and releasing at least one video lesson per week.
Going forward, this statement will form the centre point of the company on which everything else will hinge around. It will be the one statement that answers all the hard questions and guides the decision making process and the direction for the company.
The new club year starts on the 1st of February and we will be implementing a minimal price increase, however, we are offering you an early-bird deal!
Charni will be focusing entirely on her Pilates business from next year, which means she will not be returning to her coaching role with us in the new year. Charni, we wish you well on your exciting new chapter and thank you for everything you have done for the company, the club and the archers over the years. Best of Luck!
Our team will be taking a much needed break over the festive season. We will be running classes and lessons up to and including the Saturday 19th of December and then re-opening as usual on Wednesday 13th January 2021.
Our initial communications and requests for support were drafted with very little time and with even less clarity about the future. We did what we could to secure funds to avoid a disastrous financial impact on the business and our employees. As the initial panic of our circumstances begins to settle, we are slowly gaining a clearer picture of where we stand. In the interest of transparency we would like to lay that out for you:
I’ve created a tutorial video showing my design choice and how it is constructed. There are many ways to make a target buttress, this is just to give you some ideas.
The club will be accessible to members who already have keys until the lockdown is implemented, however, they do so entirely at their own risk and discretion. All tuition and standard operations will cease with immediate effect. It is unclear at this stage if or when we will be able to resume normal operation.
We want to let our clients know that we are taking this very seriously and we are doing everything we can to keep our clients and team safe while also doing our part to flatten the infection curve within our community. We want our clients to feel that the club is a safe place and if we all play our part, the interruptions and inconveniences will be limited and short-lived.

Looking to my future - After much thought and deliberation I have decided to leave Johannesburg indefinitely. After 30 years of Jo’burg life, I am craving a change of scenery.
We had a great turn-out on Sunday 6th October at the Archers of Zoolake Club Championships that were held at Action Archery in Kempton Park. Thank you to all archers and supporters that competed and spectated on the day, and made it such a successful event!
Well done to all archers on a great day of shooting and congratulations to all of those archers that won medals.
Archers wanting to achieve significant growth in the sport must take on a supplementary discipline that covers these areas and focuses on maintaining and developing muscle and skeletal balance, proprioception. There are many movements and disciplines that develop the body in the holistic manner required to maintain and develop a healthy functioning body. However, no discipline that we have come across even comes close to the benefits we see from Pilates. Pilates by nature is all about core stability. Good Pilates equals Good Archery!
We are looking for archers (or even prospective archers) of any level who are interested in becoming archery coaches.
